The 'last letter' of U-Boat Kapitanleutnant Schwigtenberg with photograph etc
Price: £275
Typical of all U-Boat members, Kapitanleutnant Schwigtenberg wrote a long letter to his wife, which would be kept at the base and only delivered to his wife in the event of his death. The letter dated 20th December 1942 was handed in by Schwigtenberg as he left St Nazaire aboard U-422. This would be Schwigtenberg's last operation, as on the 12th February 1943, U-442 was attacked and sunk by a Hudson from 48 Squadron. U-422 went down with all hands. It was 30th August 1943 before Schwigtenberg's
wife would receive this 'last letter' from her husband. The letter also comes with its original envelope, along with a signed letter from Schwigtenberg's commander (with envelope) and also a superb postcard size photograph of Schwigtenberg. The group is sold with a full translation of Schwigtenberg's 'last letter'. A very moving group of historical interest.
